Study Physician for Randomized Clinical Trial of MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder

General Description:

A physician associated with the study will be responsible for medical screening, medication tapering, and assist in assuring participant safety. The physician will review medical history, laboratory, and electrocardiogram (ECG) results, and conduct the physical exam.

Hours: Will vary by week and are flexible – maximum of about 4 active hours per week plus on-call duties

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Consult with patient’s outside prescribing physician for study mandated tapering or discontinuation plans. Supervise the tapering and/or discontinuation of any contraindicated medications or supplements
  • Review medical records obtained from other health care providers 
  • Conduct thorough medical history and focused physical exam to determine eligibility for study, with tests ordered as needed 
  • Review patients’ medical, surgical, and psychiatric records to determine eligibility. This may include discussion with the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) or other outside providers, if necessary, to discuss and clarify aspects of the medical history and/or psychiatric history 
  • Order and review ECG and one-minute rhythm strip reports to determine eligibility. Determine need to order nuclear stress test and carotid doppler ultrasound in patients with controlled hypertension and review findings.  
    • Review clinical significance of abnormal physical exam, lab, or ECG findings with medical monitor 
    • Inform the patient of any unexpected abnormal results and their possible significance, and obtain permission to convey the results to the patient’s PCP or appropriate specialist 
  • Order and review study laboratory tests
  • Prescribe anti-anxiety medications (e.g., benzodiazepine) or sleep aid, if necessary 
  • Share call duties with the medical monitor for urgent medical needs throughout the duration of each patient’s treatment (average of 12 weeks), not only during MDMA sessions. While issues in this regard are exceedingly rare, physicians on call must be reachable 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Respond to and report any adverse events, any untoward medical occurrence in a patient regardless of its causal relationship to the MDMA administered, from enrollment through treatment termination
  • Submit medical findings to medical monitor for second opinion on whether participant should be enrolled into study
  • Be on call for dosing days and the following night
  • Maintain working knowledge of MDMA based on Investigator’s Brochure 


  • Must be MD or DO 
  • Medical specialty in internal/family medicine or psychiatry preferred
